Did you know the #ABCtest could strip #FreelanceWriters of their #copyright to their own work?I shared this once last week, but if you're a US-based freelancer it's worth a re-read (and taking action).Legislators failed to push this through in the PRO Act. So now it's going through as a Department of Labor rule. An important consideration often missed in this discussion is the issue of copyright. 👉 When you write for an employer, they own the copyright to the work you do while under employment with them. 👉 When you're an independent contractor, you own the copyright to your work by default, and if the client wants it (and is willing to pay for it), they require a very specific "work for hire" element in your contract. For example, if you're a niche specialist freelance blogger, by default a client buys a license to your work (like an exclusive online license to that specific piece). But you retain the copyright, meaning you can legally create derivate works. Why would you want to do this? 👉 When you're highly-specialized, there's always a risk of overlap a client might consider derivative even if it's not. So it's partly about protecting yourself and your ability to re-share your specialized expert knowledge without any single client claiming they own any portion of that.👉 Some pieces can also be altered to work with completely different markets that don't compete (like a trade publication feature targeting industry insiders being re-worked into a consumer-facing piece). 👉 Or you might sell online exclusive rights to a client and be able to sell print rights to that same article to another. The ABC test risks your right to retain ownership of your work, or to charge the premium those added rights deserve. Protect your rights as a #freelance professional. Contact your reps.

Fellow #writers, I'd love to hear about your #HomeOffice setups. While I have a fairly large home office now, which doubles as my library and the favorite kitty hangout in the house, it wasn't like that when I started.I built a successful freelance writing, consulting, and publishing business from a desk in the bedroom corner of a little one-bedroom apartment.Both then and now, my work space is where I'm often most comfortable. It's where I build things. Fix things. Help people. It's more than just earning a living. The things I surround myself when I #WorkFromHome aren't all that different now. My computer, good lighting, a supportive chair, books, and somewhere more comfortable to sit when reading or editing, whether that's a recliner or my old bed. What are your must-haves? What makes your home office work for you as a #freelancer? Do you have a separate room? A desk in a bedroom? Do you work at your kitchen table? Or do you even prefer to work outside the home -- a favorite cafe, library, or somewhere else?Share how you work from home, and how that environment influences you as a writer.

Did you know specializing as a #FreelanceWriter doesn't have to include choosing a niche?Working in a particular niche or industry where you're a subject matter expert can be a lucrative way to specialize. But you have other options too.For example, you might specialize in:👉 working with a particular client type (corporate clients, magazines, blogs, small business owners, start-ups, etc.).👉 certain project types (blog posts, feature articles for print, #SEO #ContentWriting, sales letters, #EmailMarketing copy, etc.).You can also mix-and-match any of these things to create a unique specialty for yourself. And you can have more than one.Quick tip if you decide to specialize in multiple areas: Keep any niches or industries relatively close together if at all possible. The more your markets differ, the more effort is required to reach each of them effectively. For example, if you write pet-related content for consumer-facing websites, you might also handle website #copywriting or newsletter content for veterinarians' offices.What's your specialty?
