Is Luby's coming back to Texas? ›

The resurgence of Luby's across the Lone Star State is partially thanks to Calvin Gin — who is part of the family that founded the Chicago-based catering business Flying Food Group — buying 32 locations in Texas and the Luby's Cafeteria brand in 2021, according to the Houston Chronicle.

The dwindling Luby's Cafeteria chain closed its north Fort Worth location Wednesday, leaving only two local restaurants in a chain that was once as iconic in Texas as Whataburger or Dr Pepper. The Luby's at 3801 NE Loop 820 was to close at day's end after 27 years, leaving locations at 5901 S. Hulen St.

Sadly, the final restaurant ultimately met the same fate in 2017. Del Taco's concession to Tex-Mex may have been premature, however. Data shows that since Del Taco closed its doors in Texas, the rate at which Californians are relocating to the state has grown exponentially.

Luby's Inc. had been dealing with disappointing financial results long before the pandemic hit. Efforts to turn around the company's financial performance have included closing and selling off underperforming restaurants as well as converting some company-owned Fuddruckers locations to franchise locations.

Although Chris Pappas is the CEO and president of Luby's, the Pappas family does not own Luby's or its sister restaurant, Fuddruckers. According to the SEC filing, Chris Pappas holds 18.43% of Luby's shares; his brother, Harris Pappas, owns 17.86% of the shares.

Texas-based restaurant operator Luby's Inc., which announced it was going out of business last year due to the devastating effects of the pandemic, is winding down operations and is set to complete the dissolution of the business in June of 2022.

The planned sale is valued at $28.7 million, the company said. Luby's Inc. is also working to sell 25 additional Luby's properties. Most of the more than 1,000 employees at the 32 Luby's locations in Monday's sale will retain their positions, the company said in announcing the deal.

After months of building out the location, In-N-Out Burger is opening its doors in Webster and will serve burgers, fries and shakes, according to a Nov. 16 news release from the company. It is one of two new locations opening in the Houston area, with another opening in Cypress on the same day.

The chain is planning a Webster location. In-N-Out Burger hopes to give the Houston area two holiday gifts this season in the form of two grand openings. The California-based chain was planning to open its two newest locations in Cypress and Webster this month, according to Chron.com.
