3 stars

I would have given this book a higher rating had the blurb matched the story.

I went in expecting more angst and push and pull from the MC's. Instead, the story starts 3 years after Renfrey walked out on a ONS with his soulmate Syrra.

Renfrey and his new pack of 5 other demon hunting alphas have a new mission to visit and destroy demons in a settlement called Kurvion.

The previous settlement of loremasters hasn't been heard from in months and no one is expecting survivors. Until they get there and find Syrra and her babies.

Wolves in this story come from an alternate world, there's portal travel, loremasters and magic. All of which was great, but not what I was expecting.

The angst was near zero because unless I can empathize with Syrra's pain and heartache all that happened was that I was told Syrra was upset. Also, the MC's rarely interacted and apart from demon fighting not much character development happens.

The blurb specifically mentions that Renfrey leaves Syrra after making Syrra believe her curves were beautiful and that he rejected her. Firstly no mention is made of Syrra's curves in the story, or anything really apart from her blue eyes and blonde curls. The most thats mentioned of their one night stand was that they met in a bar, took it to the bedroom, talked and then Renfrey left Syrra sleeping while he snuck out and ran away without a word to her.

I did like the authors writing style, but this was a disappointment.

The more you know

This book was a roller coaster ride of emotions. The alpha in this book is determined that to keep everyone safe he has to live on the outside without even looking in. But can you blame him, he suffered the unspeakable and no one took the time to make sure he was okay emotionally. I’m not going to lie, there were a few times when I wanted to knock some sense into him but the author brought him out better in the end. Thank goodness his lady love was more understanding then I would have been. Their relationship was barely existent, but so worth the hassle and the evil they had to overcome to reach the HEA. The author kept me intrigued from the very beginning and I am looking forward to seeing which alpha finds their mate next.

I want to start off by saying, I enjoyed this story however, I wouldn't call it a romance and it did leave a lot to be desired. If you're looking for a quick read, then this could work for you.

I feel it would've been done a better justice if it had been longer. There was a lot of context and world building in very little time, which lead to more telling than showing. This didn't bother me and I found it engaging but I know it might to some other readers.

I wish there were more details on Syrra's life on the island alone with her babies and how they survived.

The lack of romance was due to the fact that the couple did not spend ANY time together so I think the author leaned in a little too heavily on the "soulmate" aspect to sell their love story.

They were separated for 3 years. he finds her alone on the island, fights off a demon attack, gets injured and they immediately have sex. The next day he discovers the twins and leaves for two weeks... doesn't say a word. Just turns around and leaves.

So while he's off killing demons on his own, his pack ends up helping with the twins and they pretty much get prepared to settle and build civilization on the island after they get rid of the demons.

He just then returns and has to quarantine for a week then bam they were back in bed together. Literally.

There was NO on-page time of him with his children. No on-page couple time. There wasn't even a scene of him meeting his kids, it just skipped to two weeks and they were one big happy family.

The twins are two at this point but are written like newborns. There's no mention of them ever talking or walking, which I thought was odd.

Once again, Kayla creates a world that is simple, yet complicated. She then begins to fill it with beings that we will want to know more about - and ones we can cheer as they are destroyed.

Renfrey is a demon hunter for the Halforst Council and a wolf shifter. He and five others (Torren, Darion, Reeve, Belmont, and Blaine) have been chosen for an important, and long-term, assignment. They are to travel through a portal to the island of Kurivon where a community of lorekeepers had been established to keep the island free of demon taint using their knowledge of magic. Apparently, things had recently gone horribly wrong and Halforst had lost contact with the lorekeepers. Reeve had returned to Kurivon after a short visit to Halforst only to find the town deserted and a strong demon presence on the island. The newly formed pack of six was tasked with ridding Kurivon of demons and then establishing a new community with volunteers from each of their former packs. Renfrey was to be the alpha of the pack of demon hunters. He is afraid his mate was one of the lorekeepers sent to the island. The woman he had only spent one glorious night with before deciding he was too dangerous to have a mate...

Syrra is the last of the lorekeepers on Kurivon. She has taken the only building still standing on the island, the library, as her fortress. So far, she has managed to hold it using her knowledge of wards and her cunning. The demon presence is sparse during the daylight hours, allowing her to replenish her meager food supplies with occasional foraging and fishing. She has to hold out until help comes since she has a real reason to fight - her two children. Twins, born from a one-night stand with her mate who then disappeared without even saying goodbye...

Lots of battles and drama. Can't wait for the next one in the series! I was given an advanced copy of this book by the author. My review is voluntary.

I got this book is an arc for an honest review.

Very cute short book with a strong fmc and an over-thinker mmc.
Very cute found family trope and the magic world is very interesting.
There was the question of what she is that hasn’t been answered at the end of the book so this is why it doesn’t get four stars.

Renfrey is one of many alphas working for others that will have to travel to the island of Kurivon. The lore keepers established a small community there; now they are missing. The wolves must get to the island, clear out the demons, find the missing scorekeepers, and establish places to live and bring their packs there. On the list is one familiar name to Renfrey; his soulmate Syrra; he had relations with her for one night and left her several years before. On the island, Syrra and her twins are the only ones left because of demon attacks. Only one building has survived, the library which is protected by wards. While she is foraging for food, she runs afoul demons and six wolves. One is Renfrey who does not know about his children. When they do meet up and he finds out the truth, he leaves for two weeks attacking demons left and right. The other wolves are helping care for the twins and building places to live. When he returns, he will confess a horrid truth to Syrra; will that change things? Then, a horde of demons is ready to attack with Renfrey in the lead; what is going on? Will they survive?

Very different!

This store is very different from any other shifter story I've read. First of all, when they shift, everything they're wearing or carrying shifts with them and disappears into the wolf state. When they shift back, their clothing and stuff they're carrying are intact and still there. Also, each wolf can see what the other wolves see simultaneously to what he sees. This story had demons, but not the way you'd think, and it has a love story, but it isn't the whole story. It has worrior wolves, but again, not the way you'd think. It has tragedy, fighting, survival, inner demons, magic, family, love & acceptance, vulnerability, rebuilding, sorrow, anger, forgiveness, sex (but tastefully done and still as hot), sadness, realization, traitor, secrecy, parenting, war, portals, a different Alpha stucture, etc. Let's just say it's not your typical shifter book, but it's good, refreshing! I would recommend this book, if not for anything else other than to read something different that's still a good read. Try it, I think you'll be surprised at the end that you enjoyed it, like I was. Enjoy.

Despite the cheesy title, this is a pretty deep book. It explores the Renfrey’s feelings about his childhood trauma his abandonment of Syrra, all under the umbrella of shifter wolves fighting demons. There’s a whole demon corruption backstory that’s fascinating.

Syrra forgives a bit too easily, which essentially makes this a story about the Renfrey’s emotional journey.

There are some plot holes. If Syrra is able to single handedly hold off an army of demons (hundreds in one night), why did the loremasters all die? I think the author should have gone deeper in showing us the downfall of the loremasters, because it was probably more interesting than the actual romance.

How did Renfrey fool the demons into thinking he was part of the hive?

The author made several references to things that made it seem like Renfrey and Syrra spent more than one night together, to the point that they probably should have. For example, Syrra could always make Renfrey laugh, and Renfrey always took Syrra by surprise. “Always” and “we knew each other for 8 hours” don’t equate.

The world was very interesting. The werewolves are aliens who have a portal to Earth (but also no contact with anyone on the other side of the portal, so it's hard to orient when and where it is set.) There are also "lore masters" who record history and use magic. The majority of the book is description of different battles with demons, which I mostly skimmed because it took up so many pages. The relationship building was almost non-existent, because she would basically just forgive him between battles. Also the children slept the entire time and we don't get any interaction with them. They exist but are always asleep in the crib.

Delightful

What a sweet story! One that I really enjoyed its a great story but with a twist. The characters are awesome with great chemistry. It's full of romance and passion! I especially enjoyed the part that has a set of twins, this will bring smile to your face, they have the sweetest relationship, but there is one thing I wish and that is that there was more to the ending all though I enjoyed the time spent on their relationship because it was such a delight but I wish there was more at the end. Overall this is a great first book in this romantic series which l enjoyed and I'm excited to read the next book.

Renfrey & Syrra and the twins

Renfrey & Syrra and the twins One of the best yet I just couldn’t put it down six sexy men /wolves arrived on the island but only one of them interested Syrra, a one night stand left her with a pregnancy she wasn’t expecting and he just walked away that night . The island and all its dangers they had come to clear the island of the creatures that haunted it not knowing she was there. A great read sexy yes scary yes great story yes go read it yourself

Alpha’s wolf Renfrey has dedicated his life to hunting demons, a wolf’s pack s stronger together without a doubt, you will laugh and cry reading this wonderful storyline. One night stand may lead to more than Renfrey bargain for. Great read filled with danger, suspense, anger, love, drama, you get it all. I highly recommended it, you will love it. Thanks to the author for providing me with my review copy.

The book gripped me the start ushering me the carry on and find out if Renfrew would find what she kept hidden from him behind the closed door. My kindle on my phone is a godsend because once started found it hard to put down. Staying awake all night to find out how he kept going on the outside. You need to read this book but be careful if you need to sleep cus it’ll stop you

Okayish

This book felt too long even though it only had about 200 pages, and the poor math on the kids ages was annoying. I don't love when authors include a child/children and then the kids don't actually impact their lives/the plot other than just existing. Seriously, two year olds who are constantly asleep, never getting into anything, and never seem to wake up when their mother is out on one of her missions?

I liked it

It was a good story.
The problem I had was the beginning.
It almost lost me completely.
I know you have to give some kind of monologue of their lives, but the kind that was at the beginning of this one was overkill.
I had to skim through some of it because it was just mindless back story that I didn't care about?
Thank Goodness the rest of the story was good.
The characters and storyline, thankfully, made up for the beginning.

I have had my eye on this book for a while, but something about the synopsis just felt off. Then today I read a review that said the synopsis wasn't accurate, so I gave it a shot. The synopsis was off.

The hero definitely had some issues, but he didn't promise her the moon and leave. I wouldn't exactly call it a one-night-stand, either, even though it was. They are soulmates, and they both recognize that so her jumping into bed with him (off screen in a flashback) isn't really surprising. The entire story takes place when the twins are almost 2 so nearly 3 years after they were together.

Interesting story, about werewolves protecting a portal and fighting demons. Renfrey and a team are sent through to find out what happened with a lost outpost and assume everyone on the other side is gone. And nearly everyone is, except Syrra and her twins. It's a good thing Syrra is Renfrey's soulmate, because I wouldn't have forgiven him nearly as easily as she does at the end of the story. Then again, if she hadn't, it might not have had the HEA they do. Overall, interesting/enjoyable tale.

Syrra and Renfrey finally together

This book is unexpected in how the author reveals the history of this world and the story of Syrra and Renfrey. They met for one night hookup and learned that they are mates. Unfortunately there is something in Renfrey’s past that holds him back from going all in. So he runs to escape what thinks is unthinkable. Read On!

Different

This book was a bit different. Good characters and plot along with some good twists and turns plus action and suspense. The book was more about the entire group and less about the main two characters. S little bit of romance, but more action and group involvement than what I would consider a romance story. That being said, the book was really good.

This was different than I was expecting. Second chance, lots of action, found family, all good. The reason I didn’t rate it higher is because the world building left unanswered questions, the couple barely spend any on page time together, and there wasn’t enough groveling for abandoning her. Overall, for me, it was just ok.

I really loved this book, just wished it had the twins shifting, getting into trouble like most toddlers do. That have made the book great. Thank you for listening to my opinion.

This is Syrra and Renfrey’s story. Their story captured my attention from the start. The danger, excitement, romance and some unexpected twists had me reading to the end. I received an arc of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Not what I expected

This is not what I expected… but I finished it fairly quickly and loved it. The book is a dystopian/demon kind of book which is not my favorite but it has an alpha that can not seem to figure out what he wants. It was a good pool reading book!

Almost a Hit

I love to read…..but there were too many words in this story. I don’t know how else to say it. The story was good, but I found myself skipping through large portions of detail, repetitive backstory, endless battle descriptions, etc. to actually get to the story!

3 stars!

This was a good book, I just wish the author had spent more time on the world-building, the character development, and exploring the relationship between the main characters. It was good, but it had the potential to be so much better!

Demons and Warriors

Painful and inspiring! Love is difficult without fear but with fear, especially unacknowledged fear can ruin love and life. But a magical lore keeper and a valiant warrior discover that it takes wanting to love to make it work.

Interesting series

Very interesting story. Loved Syrra's character. She is strong and capable. Renfrey I am not so sure about, his story and rationale for his actions. He felt a little odd to me. Overall, I recommend this book.
